Europcar's Berhane Takes Historic Win on Deda Elementi
Natnael Berhane of Deda Elementi sponsored Team Europcar was victorious in Stage 3 of the Tour of Turkey, a tough mountain finish to Elmali. It was a historic win as Berhane, an Eritrean rider took first victory of a sub-Saharan African rider in a Hors Categorie (HC) event on the UCI calendar, a great result from a former World Cycling Centre (WCC) trainee. 22-year-old Berhane is also the new race leader of the eight-stage race."This is enormous," Berhane said after his win. "It was a very big stage. I didn't expect to win because I didn't know how well I could climb up here. This is my first year as a pro and my first participation to the Tour of Turkey. It was my dream to win such a race, that's why I was in tears when I crossed the line. It was the best stage to win here!"
WCC Director Frédéric Magné said "It is an historic day for Eritrea, for Africa and for cycling. Natnael Berhane's win demonstrates the exceptional qualities of this rider, who preferred to remain amateur for an extra season in order to continue his progression. It is also proof of the quality of the coaching and training work undertaken at the WCC."
